Letter to City Coucillors

by the Working Group on Racial Equity

Dear Councillor

As you are aware, the Working Group on Racial Equity had filed a submission on the creation of an anti-racism committee at City Hall.

We are looking for your support for the brief and its recommendations when your group meets on Friday March 30.

We believe that such a committee will be proactive, efficient and effective if its focus and mandate are on fighting racism, if it is given the necessary resources, and if it is well-positioned at City Hall. We recognize that, in its final years, the old Mayor's Committee Against

Racism and Discrimination (MCARD) failed to be effective because its mandate was too wide and its actions unfocused.

We are sure that any new committee will be most effective working with an anti-racism coordinator in charge of programs at an Access and Equity Office in Finance and Corporate Services. This is a model that is used by most organizations that plan on addressing the needs of a diversifying population.

The Working Group on Racial Equity would like to express its thanks for your hard work in reviewing and supporting our brief.

We look forward to working with you.

Please do not hesitate to call upon us if you have any questions.
